On July 9, 2022, a record-breaking short-term heavy rainfall alert was issued in Kuma Village.
In a short period of time, the amount of rainfall was comparable to the heavy rains of 2020.
The ATOMcam installed at Kumamoto Prefectural University experienced heavy rainfall in the middle of the night for the first time, and we were worried whether it would work properly. However, we were able to see footage even in the heavy rain, but the camera, which was located far from the river, was unable to see the water level of the river.
On the other hand, the camera installed near the river at Uehara Bridge provided footage so clear that even the flow speed could be seen, and after viewing the footage from the camera, people living near Uehara Bridge were called out to and evacuated.
I realized that by being able to view places that previously required a person to go and see them on their smartphones, risks can be reduced.
