Workshop held at Nanryo High School to create a rain garden

A workshop on creating rain gardens was held at Kumamoto Prefectural Nanryo High School on July 7th, 11th, and 22nd, 2022.

First, we selected six potential locations where rain gardens could be created, and then calculated how large a rain garden area would be needed for each location.

(Calculating the area of a rain garden based on roof size, infiltration capacity, rainfall and runoff control target)

Based on the results of this, we discussed where we could create a rain garden, whether it would be easy for people to see and where there would be a lot of foot traffic, and we decided that it would be best to create the rain garden on the lawn next to the entrance.

The students obtained permission from their teachers and the student council and officially created a rain garden on the lawn next to the entrance.

Next, we discussed the design of the rain garden. Each person brought in a photo of what kind of rain garden they wanted, but at first, everyone had a different image. However, as we continued to discuss, we all agreed that we wanted a garden that was representative of the Hitoyoshi and Kuma region.

(Design considerations)

In the end, the rain garden design that was created was based on the image of the Hitoyoshi and Kuma region, as shown below.

Based on this, we plan to create an actual rain garden at the end of August.
